Hotel Antsotegi

Really nice place, and the walk from town is only about 20 minutes. The route follows the river, so you don't have to take the busy main road.

The staff were kind, and the restaurant was good. The room, though, felt shabby, and its fan didn't work. The hotel is pretty basic and funky, but it looks like it was renovated years ago and could use a facelift.

I rarely leave reviews, but the whole team here deserves a thank you. Iker was always smiling and even taught us some Basque. Anna helped us find veggie restaurants and arranged our activities, and the rest of the staff were cheerful and helpful too. The hotel has loads of character and history, and we loved the food in its lovely restaurant. We really enjoyed staying here.

The young woman who checked me in was great, and I could tell she was trying hard to do a good job. My checkout experience was very different. After the bartender told me the woman was the boss, I found her sitting at a table with her head down and eyes closed. I rang the bell first, but nobody came, so I had to look for someone. When I said, “Excuse me,” she didn't acknowledge me. Once she opened her eyes, she just looked at me without a greeting or pleasantry. I told her I was ready to check out, and instead of speaking to me, she turned to a girl I'd never met and asked if I was with her. It made me feel like I was back in the USA, where people of color are treated poorly. I never expected that in Spain. She might say it wasn't about race, but either way, I found her treatment of me awful and wouldn't stay there again. There were other issues too: the shower needed a better cleaning because it had spots of mold. Booking.com listed laundry as available, but when I asked, I was told there was no laundry.
