Hotel 4* Puente de Alconétar

The building and little garden are lovely, and breakfast was great, with friendly, welcoming staff. But the state of the rooms made this a miserable stay, and I wouldn’t return or recommend it. We found strange bugs all over our first room, including in the bed, on the furniture, and in corners. Some seemed to have been dead for a while. We panicked, shook out the bags and clothes we’d left there, packed up, and went to reception. They offered another room, which didn’t seem to have the same insect problem when we checked, but it was dusty, had cobwebs in most corners, and smelled odd. The smell wouldn’t go away. We got different explanations for the bugs: local insects that couldn’t be avoided, a recent change in the wood spray, and disinfection that either had happened or was going to happen. Nobody was rude and people tried to help, but they didn’t seem very concerned, and no one even inspected the room. Whatever the cause, the rooms clearly weren’t being cleaned properly. That many insects isn’t normal, even if they’re local bugs that can’t be completely kept out. We also saw a few crawling around the top floor under the wooden ceiling, so I doubt we were the first to notice them. Between the smell, moving rooms, checking for bugs, and seeing the dirt, I was too anxious to sleep. We left exhausted the next morning, glad to get away. Dinner was underwhelming and service extremely slow, though breakfast was a bright spot.

A gorgeous historic building, with friendly staff and great food. The swimming pool was fantastic, too. Would recommend 👍🏼

The location is beautiful, parking is plentiful, and there are two Tesla EV chargers. The pool was closed until June 1st. Breakfast was really good, while dinner tasted nice but came in small portions with limited choices. The first seating was at 8:30, which is typical for Spain. Staff were friendly, though hard to find: we arrived at 2:30 pm, even though check-in started at 2, rang the bell, and waited until 2:50 for the receptionist. The rooms felt stale and more like a 3-star place than a 4-star one, and they didn’t match the upgraded room photos we booked from. We reserved two rooms: one had no safe, and the safe in the other didn’t work. There was no coffee maker, and one room had paper cups while the other had none. We’d stayed at a much cheaper 4-star hotel the night before, and it was far better by comparison. The gym was disappointing, with only very old cardio machines and one cable rack. The air conditioning didn’t work, and you had to ask staff to unlock it.

After a full day of travel, we found the staff so friendly and helpful, and nothing felt like too much trouble. We had our pup with us, and it’s dog friendly. The hotel is in a lovely historic building that looks like a palace. Our room was gorgeous, warm, and had a lovely view of the square, a very comfortable bed, and a bathtub. We’d happily stay here again on our travels. Thanks for such a lovely stay.
