Hotel Rural Gaintza

My booking mistake cost me $150. On May 13 I meant to reserve a room for September 14, but accidentally booked May 14 instead. The hotel charged my card the following day for a no-show. I explained what happened and asked if they could reverse it, but they said no. That's their right, though it didn't feel very generous. We won't visit the property or buy their wines when we're in the area in September. Then they emailed to ask how we enjoyed our stay. Pretty ironic.

The room had a nice vineyard view, and breakfast was simple but fine. It's a pleasant, simple hotel about a five-minute walk from Old Getaria, and they greet you with a free bottle of their own wine. The walk back up from the old city is quite steep, though you can take the escalators from Juan Sebastian Elkano monument and then the elevator to the top. There was a slight sewage smell from the bathroom in the morning. It didn't spoil the holiday, since we were already checking out.

We had a big room with a shower and a large bathtub that was great for relaxing, and breakfast was huge. The hotel is wonderful, only about five minutes from town, in beautiful vineyard surroundings. The staff were gracious and made the stay pleasant. We also took the vineyard tour, which was great. Can't wait to come back to one of my favorite cities in the world.

We had a great time at Hotel Rural Gaintza, staying in a spacious junior suite with a hot tub and separate shower. The room was very clean, and there was a bright, well-organized shared living room. The hotel sits in a family-run vineyard about a 30-minute drive from San Sebastián, where we were spending our holiday. Staff were friendly and always willing to lend a hand. Breakfast was generous and delicious. The owner gave us a vineyard tour and wine tasting with real enthusiasm and passion.
