Azkorri Beach House

Alfredo made the whole stay feel easy and personal. He was our tourist guide, taxi driver, shopping helper, firewood provider, and house manager, and we felt as if we'd known him for ages. I was comfortable asking him for anything, and I'm sure he'd have found a solution if we'd needed help with the children. I only wish we'd spent more time with him. We had come for my husband's 60th birthday, and when it was time to leave, everyone was already talking about coming back. We just need an excuse to get together again. The house is huge, so even with kids playing the piano under my supervision, they weren't driving everyone mad. There was room for all of us to play, shout, sing, dance, cook, sit by the fire, and do our own thing. We meant to take day trips, but mostly stayed at the house, with an occasional walk to the beach, about 10 minutes away. When the weather let up, I spent ages by the barbecue and in the garden. This is the place if you want a big shared home, breakfasts together, piano and pool, barbecues, and conversations with whoever's still awake at 6 in the morning. It felt like “nana’s house,” with professionally cleaned sheets and towels. Anyone expecting 4 or 5 star hotel standards or everything to be 100% perfect may prefer a hotel. I had read some reviews and had reservations, but a little cleaning after myself, or even before, didn't bother me at all for the sake of staying somewhere that felt like heaven. Everyone had enough space, so there was no cabin fever or stepping on each other's toes. A friend had to bring the kids because they couldn't find a babysitter, but the house was spacious enough for that to work. Two friends cancelled at the last minute, which pushed the price up a little for the rest of us, though it was still affordable. At full capacity every day, the cost would've been more than reasonable, maybe even really cheap. It was probably our best holiday in a long time, and the house mattered as much as the celebration.
