La Posada de Pradorey

The gardens and play area behind the hotel were a hit with our kids, though both could use some renovation. Our room was clean and comfortable, but there wasn't much furniture, which felt like a drawback. The main courses could have been a little more generous, even though the food itself was excellent and full of flavor. We stayed with our family and found the welcome warm from the moment we arrived. The hotel sits in a lovely, peaceful area that's still convenient, and the classic building and elegant interior make a strong impression. We had a very enjoyable stay, and a few improvements could make the place even better.

Breakfast was a pleasant surprise, with much more on offer than I expected. The staff were very friendly, too. But don't be fooled by the name “superior” for the room we booked. The high ceilings and nice-looking details couldn't change the feel of it, which reminded me of a nun's chamber. There was one wardrobe, a wooden bed frame with bars on the windows, and no TV. The building had the atmosphere of a dungeon in an old castle or church, if that's your sort of thing. The spring mattress was horrible for me.

The room was spotless, and the shower was great. We also had an amazing view from the window and could hear lots of birds. Staying at the posada, having a meal there, and taking the included tasting made for just the enotourism experience we'd hoped for in Ribera del Duero. The hospitality felt authentic, and the stay was great value for money. If you wish you'd bought more wine at Bodega Pradorey, you can add to your purchase at the Posada, or order a bottle to go with the meal. Reception and the cook even give you smiles for free. Don't visit the Bodega without also going to the Posada, or you'll regret it forever.

We stopped overnight on the way to Santander. It was easy to find from E4, and the old house has been beautifully converted in a country setting. The staff were friendly, helpful, and clearly proud of the place. There's an enclosed outdoor pool with loungers and a tennis court. We had the tapas set meal with wine, and it was tasty with good portions. You have to pay extra if you don't want the set white wine. Our attic room on the second floor was spotlessly clean and well converted, and there is a lift, but it was tiny, about 139 square feet, roughly 13 by 10. The bed was a small double, not the king or twin beds common in most hotels, so we didn't sleep well. The bath was small, impossible for a soak after a long drive, with a shower over it. I'd suggest booking a large room instead of a standard one if you stay, as it's a lovely, welcoming hotel.
