Hotel America

The place has an easygoing bar and cafe atmosphere and seems to be a local favourite. Its original 50s-era interior has been updated sympathetically. Some rooms feel dated, but they’re clean and comfortable, with a good shower. We had breakfast at the outside tables. The coffee and orange juice were very good, though the toasted sandwich wasn’t as good. Good value.

The rooms and bathrooms are roomy, the beds are very comfortable, and parking is free. There’s no restaurant, though the popular bar serves some food, including breakfast. The staff are consistently kind and helpful. It has a feel a bit like an American motel. Good value and comfortable, so I’d recommend it.

I accidentally booked this hotel near check-in because it has the same name as another place I meant to stay at. I noticed within five minutes and tried to cancel through Expedia, but neither the hotel nor Expedia customer service could reach them. I can understand charging for the first night, but keeping the full amount for a three-day stay when I never went there, and refusing even a partial refund, feels outrageous. The hotel may be nice, but this kind of policy makes it hard to trust them. Calling it policy doesn’t make taking all that money feel any less like daylight robbery.

I slept terribly. The room was very dated, the mattress springs popped and creaked whenever I moved, and it was so noisy I could hear another guest snoring as well as business travelers getting up early. I’m back home in Dallas, TX and have started treatment because I’m pretty sure I picked up scabies at this hotel. I felt something biting me before I fell asleep, but after traveling all day I was too exhausted to worry about it. Our room was on the third floor, maybe number 303, though I was too tired to remember for sure. The one bright spot was the kind man in the lobby, who fed us late at night with a smile and was very hospitable. Still, don’t stay here.
