The castle setting above Jaen is incredible, and I’d definitely stay here again. The restaurant, though, was a letdown: odd medieval-sounding combinations like tomato and pickled partridge salad and venison with strawberry sauce, plus confusing service. With my basic Spanish, ordering turned into a five-minute debate about what I was allowed to choose. Breakfast was disappointing too, mostly sweet pastries and cold cuts. Better to eat in Jaen.

The food is the one thing that makes no sense here. It tasted like bland microwave-ready meals, and other reviews have raised the same issue without any apparent response from Parador management. Still, the castle is stunning, the views are superb, the pool feels idyllic, the room was lovely, and the staff were very friendly. I recommend staying, but bring a sandwich.

The pool and garden are lovely, and parking is right next door. The Parador sits along a mountain ridge above town on the site of three castles. The newest remains as a visitor attraction, while the two earlier ones were used to build the Parador. The menu is impressive, and the pastry chef is exceptional.

Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Everything else felt beautiful too, from the room and pool to the views and atmosphere. A really relaxing stay.
