We needed a quiet break, and Cubas gave us just that. It’s a tiny, pretty hamlet with a church built into the rock, a bus stop, and El Forastero, a cafe/bar for a drink. Alcalá del Jucar is close by for exploring, while Cubas itself felt like a cool, green refuge when we wanted to get away from crowds. It’s about two hours from Alicante, but it felt like another world. Casa Rural Herradura del Jucar is a traditional cave house with modern comforts, including WIFI, air conditioning, and a Nespresso coffee machine. There’s a patio under a grapevine arbor, plus a fenced garden beside the river with a barbecue and tables. We spent time reading and having a cold beer there, with the river nearby and birdsong and church bells in the distance. The setting in the canyon along the Jucar River is so peaceful. We asked the owner by email for permission to bring our dogs, which is required. They’re old ladies now, but still love a change of scene, and walking them along the river in the morning was lovely. We spent our anniversary weekend here and had a perfect time. We’d happily recommend it to anyone after a relaxing retreat in nature.
