Hotel Puerta de Segovia

I booked just a couple of hours before arriving and had read both good and bad reviews, so I knew what to expect. The hotel worked well as a base for the city center and nearby places like San ildefonso and Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, with views of Segovia. My third-floor room looked out over the city, including the aqueduct and Cathedral at night. The room was clean and spacious, and there was enough parking in the evenings. The staff were helpful, if not especially friendly, which was fine. The minibar was sparsely stocked, the walk to the room was confusing and I got lost once, and the bathroom felt dated. Breakfast service was good, but the room they used had no windows and harsh fluorescent lighting. Everything did the job. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could.

Our group arrived one evening in early April 2025. The hotel itself seemed fine, but dinner was the worst part of the experience. The staff were dressed in black suits and looked completely unsmiling. They served the food as if they were angry with us for no reason. When one of us asked for a napkin, a waiter said no, even though there was a pile on the side table. That's how it felt to me. While we ate, I felt like we were at a funeral. Before leaving, I had to tell them to smile and be gentle with customers.

The lobby looked lovely when I first walked in, and I was hoping for a great first New Year's away from home. That didn't happen. The rooms were spacious but very hot when I entered. Dinner at 9 pm was terrible, with huge portions, and when it came time to eat the grapes, I couldn't because they had so many bones. After the party I politely asked someone in the lobby for a towel. He asked why, saying that since there were so many of us, he didn't feel like getting that many. I left disappointed and hope the service improves soon.

It felt more like a three-star hotel. The outside facilities need refreshing, especially around the pool, if it's to be a four-star place. There's no disabled hoist to get into or out of the pool, leaving one wheelchair user embarrassed. That's unacceptable for a four-star establishment. The staff were friendly but a little distant, and the service needs work. The bedroom was a bit dated, and the Wi-Fi wasn't very good.
