We had a hire car, so visiting Santa Cruz was easy, and we also did plenty of walking along the coastal roads. The main roads weren’t busy and were easy to drive, and the locals were patient and considerate while I got used to left-hand drive and hill starts. Some of the shorter routes are very steep, though, and a 4x4 would be better. We were staying up in the mountains, watching shooting stars overhead, and the peaceful setting and sea outlook were wonderful. The hotel itself was basic, just what I wanted, and I wouldn’t let some of the reviews put you off. The bathroom was clean with fresh towels, and the maid swept and mopped the rooms daily. We didn’t eat at the hotel, instead shopping at the local Lidl and catering for ourselves. The pool looked clean, but we didn’t use it because it was too cold.

The pool wasn’t heated and averaged around 17°C during our stay, and the jacuzzi area wasn’t very clean, so we didn’t use it. The bathroom was mostly clean, though a few areas could have been cleaner, which is why I took off one star. We stayed two weeks in the bernas garden apartments, without breakfast or dinner. Our apartment had an east-facing balcony and a west-facing terrace. In February, the small heater in the bedroom came in handy. The living room had a TV with mostly Spanish channels, a couch, dining table and fireplace, which we didn’t use. There was a small kitchen with two pots, a pan, little fridge, toaster and coffee machine. Housekeeping came every day except Thursdays and Sundays. Towels were changed twice a week and sheets once a week. Having a car made arrival easy. I’m not sure how frequent public transport is, but there was a bus stop not too far away. All in all, I enjoyed the stay.

It’s very quiet, and the staff were really helpful. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen was decent, with plates, cutlery and even a corkscrew 😋. For the price, it’s a good little hotel, but you need a car to get the most out of the location. I’d definitely come back for a longer stay next time.

The rooms were adequate, but the place is remote, so you really need a car. Book one ahead of time: the first three companies we tried were fully booked. The restaurant food was only just warm, so I had to go into the kitchen and use the microwave. There aren’t any restaurants within walking distance, and there are no footpaths on the road to San Pedro. Bring a torch if you’re out at night.

The hotel is a bit old, but it was clean and we really enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was okay. We’d definitely come back.
