The Plaza de las Flores in Málaga stands where the Palacio de los Larios once was. Its fountain has five spouts shaped like tiles, along with a plaque commemorating the site. The plaque says the fountain was inaugurated in 2003 during the plaza’s remodeling, and that the only remains of the palace façade survived there. The palace stood where La Equitativa was later located and was destroyed in the Civil War.

The center of Malaga feels inhospitable now, overflowing with bars. How did this beautiful square end up taken over by so many bar terraces, pushing citizens toward other areas that are just as full of bars?

This lovely square in central Málaga is a great place to come across while wandering on purpose through the charming, narrow streets. There are excellent restaurants here, with good prices and plenty of choice on the menus. Some nights there’s street entertainment aimed more at tourists. When I had dinner there, though, the restaurant had a small piano concert on its terrace.
