Hotel Amaraigua - Adults Only

My friends and I had a great stay and are looking forward to coming back soon. The hotel is right on the beach, with fresh, tasty food and fun, friendly staff. There was brilliant entertainment every night and a fully stocked self-serve bar. I highly recommend it, absolutely brilliant! 🥰

The food was great, with a different selection each day. The pool area was clean, with plenty of sunbeds, though not enough parasols. The pool itself is small but never too busy. I also liked that the hotel is right on the beach, so you can nip down for a swim in the sea. The rooms are fairly basic but clean. I found the bed uncomfortably firm, though some people prefer that. The local area is busy, and Santa Susanna is a popular spot just a five-minute walk away, with loads more bars and cafes.

The beach access is great, just out through the back gate by the pool. The bar staff were lovely and fun to chat with, the cocktails were nice, and there were plenty of alcohol options. The ladies at reception were also approachable and helpful. There was always something going on for entertainment, and shops and the train station were very close. Getting to Girona or Barcelona by train was easy, though the tracks right outside mean you can hear and feel the trains. Unfortunately, the service from some staff was poor from the start. We arrived late at night and an older man greeted us by looking at our passports and asking for 18 euros without explaining the charge. He only told us what it was for after we asked. We never got our 2 euros change because his only response was “no change.” When we asked another man at reception to check our TV, which wasn’t working, he rolled his eyes, so we knew we wouldn’t get help. The two ladies at reception, though, were lovely and easy to approach. Our room was shocking when we walked in. It smelled strongly of mildew, damp, and sewage, and everything felt damp. The bedding was extremely uncomfortable and had hair from previous guests on it. Luckily, the air conditioning worked and helped with the smell a little. There was mould on the walls in the passageway and bathroom, and the ceiling boards were damaged, with spider webs, and looked very unkempt. The housekeeping staff did a great job, though. The rooms definitely didn’t look like the website pictures. The online images need updating because they don’t reflect the current state of the hotel. It’s an old, rather unseemly building with crumbling walls. There’s even a hole in the ceiling leading outside in the ladies’ bathroom at reception. The pool area now has only one larger pool. The smaller one is gone and has been used for extra bed space. Drinks are served only in plastic cups, so you can’t take pretty-looking cocktail photos. The food was okay but underwhelming, and we ate out for the last two days. The dessert selection was nice, with lots of options and fresh fruit. There was plenty of food, including fresh salad, but the hotel really needs to check and fix its food labels. I speak several languages and still couldn’t always tell what meat was being served. One label showed turkey in the picture but said “pork” in Russian. Of all the places I’ve stayed, this was my least favourite for food. This was our honeymoon, and the stay didn’t meet my expectations. If the room and service from some staff had been better, my rating would have been very different. I absolutely don’t think it’s a 4-star hotel. I don’t recommend it and wouldn’t stay again. Luckily, Spain’s beautiful scenery, culture, and lovely people saved the trip for us.

The hotel is next to the beach and in a good location, with friendly, cheerful staff and great service. The food is pretty good, and the open bar is a huge plus. Unfortunately, neither the rooms nor the hotel area were clean, and to me it didn’t look like a 4-star hotel.
