Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banus

Large sections of the hotel were taped off and closed, leaving it looking run-down and unappealing. For a supposed 5-star, you’d expect the service and amenities to make up for that, but even things usually included in a 4-star cost extra. Water, ice, and even basic tea bags in the room were charged for, and the tea was never replenished. Breakfast was especially disappointing: it was served in a temporary setup in a tired sports bar, with little choice and poor quality, worse than budget chains. I’ve stayed at other 5-stars in Marbella and Banus that felt more like 4-star hotels, but they made this one look closer to 6-star. The rooms were very basic. The Rituals toiletries seemed to be in refilled bottles, which raised hygiene and allergy concerns, and the wall holder snapped in half when I tried using it. The shower screen wouldn’t move, so water went everywhere, and the room smelled dusty and musty. I also found hairs in the bed, unacceptable at any hotel, let alone one claiming 5 stars. I asked for an upgrade and was told the hotel was full, though it seemed oddly quiet with large areas closed. I overheard several other guests asking for upgrades too. The hair dryer blew air for five seconds, then broke. It all felt like it was falling apart. The one real plus was the location, an easy walk along the beach into Puerto Banus. If you get a very cheap deal, it might just seem acceptable. But anyone paying full price, over £800 a week, would be incredibly disappointed. It felt as if the hotel was about to close or was mid-refurbishment, though I saw no work happening. We stayed at Alanda earlier this year, where they apologized for construction, made significant improvements, and upgraded us. In my opinion, people rating this hotel 5 stars must have paid little and never experienced a true 5-star stay. I’d rate it a comfortable 3 stars.

The hotel still has a relaxed holiday feel, even though it was built about 20 years ago. Rooms are clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Its location is excellent, with an easy walk along the sea to Puerto Banús. I’d recommend a sea-view room for the lovely sunrises and sunsets.

I’ve been staying here for several years and was back about a month ago. The team was fantastic, as always. Everyone, from housekeeping to reception and the restaurant, was first-rate with guests. Special thanks to Vélica at reception for being professional and kind, and to José in the restaurant, who’s always smiling and ready to make us laugh. Thanks to the whole team. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to arrange a birthday surprise for my girlfriend. The room decoration looked beautiful and made the day feel special. The location is great, breakfast has plenty of choice, and dinner at the restaurant was delicious. We really appreciated the team’s effort and had a wonderful stay at Guadalpin Banús. Highly recommend it.
