Goodnight, and run while you can! After a long walk in the sun, the last thing I wanted was the albergue’s overwhelming smell of steamy, fermenting manure. It’s the only one in town, and at 16 euros a bed you get to feel like a sweaty cow. The wifi didn’t work either. We were hungry, but waited more than two hours for our “complete meal,” which cost 25 euros and came without bread, coffee or dessert. The food was very low quality, and the whole thing felt like a huge scam. They remembered every charge, but somehow not the items they were supposed to bring, and didn’t seem to care that we’d been left waiting. We asked to pay only for the dinner we actually received, since so much was missing, but they refused and charged us in full. Avoid the stuffed peppers for your own sake. They were lifeless blobs filled with what I can only describe as tuna water and little else. If you’re going to cook an endangered shark, at least make it taste like something. The pork chop was about as thin as a credit card.

The hosts were really friendly and helpful. Albergue Monte Aro in Lago has a large upstairs room with 24 bunk beds, and it’s clean and modern. They provide disposable sheets and a quilt. Downstairs there are four unisex shower and toilet rooms, plus a kitchenette with a microwave and fridge, seating, and laundry. There’s also a covered outdoor area. The bar serves meals at set times, though you can get drinks and snacks there any time.

Lua the dog won me over, too. Please give her a pat from me! The owners of this albergue and restaurant were extraordinarily kind, and the warmth of everyone working there made the night feel special for us pilgrims. We slept comfortably and had a fantastic pilgrims dinner and an amazing breakfast. Thanks for making this stop so lovely.

My friend and I were both starving and thirsty when we arrived late, nearly missing lunchtime. There hadn’t been anywhere along the way serving hot food, but the shelter owner still offered to cook for us. We were so grateful. The warm soup starter warmed our hearts as much as our bodies. 😁💛
