Apartamentos Portonovo

The pool is huge and lovely, though it’s saltwater. Our room was a decent size, and the bathroom had a built-in hairdryer. For a family of five, be aware the sofa bed is really just a rock-hard couch, probably only suitable for kids under 12. They brought up a very comfortable mattress topper when we asked. There aren’t ceiling fans, but reception sent two fans straight up to us. The staff are so friendly. I’d recommend it.

We had a double balcony and a sea view from our first-floor apartment. It was roomy, with plenty of cupboard space, good built-in wardrobes and a clean, spacious bathroom. The kitchenette had a microwave and a two-ring hob, and I managed to cook a full English breakfast for all five of us. The pool is big, lovely, and has plenty of sun loungers. Everyone on staff was friendly at any hour, and the cleaners, who came most days except their day off, were friendly and did a great job. A TV remote requires a €20 deposit and a safe key €5, but you get both deposits back at checkout. We’ve just finished a two-week holiday at portonovo gran canaria and had a great time. There’s no air conditioning, and it was very loud from the neighbours and street music. The shower door was broken and wouldn’t move either way, so I had to crawl into the shower. The bathroom door was broken too, and the bathroom lights flickered or didn’t work. All the shelves were crooked. I put my deodorant on one and watched it slowly slide down. I can’t decide whether the curry smell from the restaurant downstairs was a plus or a minus.

We’re a couple from Norway who came to Puerto Rico hoping for a nice holiday. The apartments are okay, and the hotel is close to Puerto Rico Beach, but without air conditioning the heat was too much for us. We asked reception for a fan and got one that didn’t work at all. When we asked again a couple of days later, they said none were available. The other couple travelling with us also had no air conditioning, and their toilet made a pumping noise every five seconds. I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you aren’t used to a hot climate.
