After the way our room change was handled, it was hard to find much positive about the hotel. The replacement room, supposedly a better one, was the same category and had a blocked shower drain, broken light switches, and a remote held together with old electrical tape. This was the first time I’d experienced service like this, or rather so little service, at a four-star hotel. I’d booked two weeks four months ahead and emailed in advance to ask for a quiet room. Instead, we were put opposite the kitchen exhaust, which ran from early morning until late evening. When we asked at check-in to move, the receptionist said a clean room would be ready the next morning. A different receptionist then said there were no clean rooms in our category, but we could pay an extra €50 a night to upgrade. It felt as though we were being asked to pay to solve the hotel’s shortage of clean rooms. That evening, a senior receptionist promised we could move the following day, our third day there, to a nearby room on the same floor, farther from the exhaust. She told us to collect a new key at 13:00 and move our things. But at 11:30, while we were by the pool, we were called and told to bring all our luggage to reception immediately because our room needed to be prepared for incoming guests. We were warned that if we didn’t leave right then, we wouldn’t be moved at all. We asked if we could go straight to the new room, but were told it was still being cleaned and we’d have to wait. No one explained why they couldn’t clean the new room first and then our old one, or when we’d be allowed in. We sat with our suitcases at reception until 14:00 while staff checked in other guests, just not us. When I asked what was going on, the senior receptionist said she was “doing us a favor” by giving us a “better room,” which we should technically pay extra for, and seemed surprised I was unhappy. I usually go back to hotels I’ve stayed at before, but I won’t this time. It feels like the hotel is in a deep existential crisis and refuses to admit it. First impressions start at reception, and after that welcome it was very hard to find any positives. The best choice we made on vacation was renting a car, which gave us plenty of good experiences despite the chaotic start to our stay.

It’s set in a striking spot, built right at the bottom of what looks like a cliff edge. The hotel has two separate levels, one above the other. Staff were very friendly, the food was good, though sometimes it could have been warmer. The room was fine, and when we saw one cockroach the staff dealt with it quickly. There wasn’t much for children to do. My family and I probably wouldn’t return because we like exploring new places, but I’d still recommend it. Marina Elite is good value for a relatively low price. Some of the less positive reviews sound like they may come from people used to five-star hotels in Monte Carlo.

There’s plenty to do nearby. Reception can arrange a taxi, but we mostly took the glass-bottom ferry or the very regular bus. The hotel had a friendly feel and a good range of drinks. I’d have liked more daytime entertainment and a bit more variety in the evening. The food was great, with something different each day in the main restaurant and a few themed nights. Mexican night is well worth trying. My partner loved the scrambled eggs at breakfast, though our attempts to make them at home haven’t been quite the same. Our room was spotless when we arrived and there were lots of clean bath towels. One thing to know: beach towels cost €15 each, but the money is returned at the end. The staff were lovely and worked so hard day and night, and most seemed to be smiling all the time. We had a really lovely stay and could hardly fault the place. It’s a calm, welcoming spot, and we’d definitely return.

Leaving tomorrow and I’m already sad 😢. This has been the best holiday I’ve had. The staff are so friendly and happy to help, and they were amazing with the kids ❤️. The views are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. There’s a huge choice of food for everyone, even little ones, and pretty much any drink you can think of. The rooms are beautiful too. I couldn’t fault a thing.

The pool areas were fantastic and clean, with loungers available if you got there early. It’s easy to get to Puerto rico, about five minutes by bus from the stop just across the road. The sea-view rooms have incredible views. The hotel is clean, well located, and worth the price. We had a pleasant, fun holiday and I’d return. The staff were all very friendly, and housekeeping cleaned our room every day. The room itself was clean and the beds comfortable. Getting there was a struggle, though: with four suitcases, a baby, and a pram, we had to make several trips up the stairs because the lift to our room was broken. They should help guests with their bags or make sure the lifts are working. The room had an empty fridge, and bottled water would have been useful, as many hotels provide it. The fleece throw for the pull-out bed was itchy. We asked for a duvet but got another fleece blanket, which was disappointing, so we wrapped it in a sheet instead of asking again. We stayed four nights. Breakfast and lunch were great, and there was a good drinks selection, but the evening buffet was just okay and very repetitive. My autistic son has a very limited diet and found it difficult: only one night out of four had food he liked, so on the other nights he had chips and fruit.
