Porlamar

We stayed in room 304 for a week from 11th September. The hosts were lovely and always happy to help, and the harbour is only 10 minutes away. We also had a great time with the crowd staying there at the same time and made lots of new friends. Porlamar is great value and deserves a higher rating. We'll definitely be back. Timo CARES, and that made all the difference to me. It was my first solo holiday, and I felt safe, welcome and looked after. Timo & Nadia, Muchas Gracias! The food was amazing, the cleaners worked SO hard, and the place was spotlessly clean. We laughed a lot, made great memories and I left with some lovely friends. There's a beautiful pool and sun terrace, too. Some people complain about the odd cockroach, but to me it's like finding a beetle in England, so get over it. It's basic, and if you're going to moan about that, don't go. Personally, I've never felt more at home on holiday. The views are beautiful and there's lots to explore. You can walk, take a bus or get a taxi to the main beaches, Puerto Rico and the surrounding areas, though it's hilly, as Gran Canaria is. I only left yesterday and already want to return. Adios amigos, te veré de nuevo!! X

The rooms are very basic and the pillows are awful, though they were cleaned regularly. The poolside bar is great, the omelette was delicious, and the staff are so friendly. It's a few steep steps down to the local shops, bars and restaurants, but it's worth it. The ferries from the local port are fantastic. I'd recommend going to Anfi or Puerto Morgan.

We arrived at midnight to locked gates and a closed reception. The phone number was on the gate, but it took some figuring out to enter the code and get through. The elderly gentleman who eventually answered didn't speak English, so we used Google Translate. We needed water, but there was none available on site. He sent us outside the property, about a 10-minute walk away. Other guests couldn't work out how to call the number, so I helped them. The next morning, I looked around for the receptionist as we'd been told to bring our passports to reception. I found them at the bar. When I complained about the arrival, they showed no interest, didn't apologise, and didn't offer us water to buy, even though it was for sale that morning. The safe was built into the floor at the back of a wardrobe, under a drawer, so I had to get on my hands and knees to use it. The toaster only worked on one side, and there was one socket for the coffee machine, kettle, toaster or microwave. The microwave had mould inside, so we couldn't use it. The cleaner came in once while we were there, but the microwave wasn't checked. I couldn't clean it myself because there were no cloths or washing detergent. After we found a cockroach, having only a curtain between the bedroom and lounge was very stressful. The shower took ages to use because it ran very slowly, and it was only lukewarm for five minutes before turning really cold. There was never anyone at reception to raise these issues with. I've never stayed anywhere so unwelcoming in all my years of holidays. My friend and I were finally offered a bottle of water each while waiting for our bus on the last day. I went home exhausted and couldn't relax. The self-catering facilities weren't acceptable, so I had to spend much more money eating out. I could go on, but please don't waste your money.
