Ona Marinas de Nerja Spa Resort

We had such a good time over the winter holidays that we came back for another week in February. The hotel is right on the beach, well maintained, and the staff are friendly. Our two-bedroom apartments were a good size, with kitchenettes that had a small fridge, microwave, and two-burner stovetop. We only cooked lunch now and then since both stays included breakfast and dinner. Half board is well worth it: lots of choice at both meals, with dinner mains changing daily and good options for kids. My grown daughter doesn't like spices and still had plenty to choose from. Breakfast is fairly standard with small daily changes, usually some digestive water such as mint and lemon or rosemary cinnamon, sometimes juice smoothies, plus juice and coffee from machines. Dinner has a full salad bar, breads, cheeses, cold cuts, desserts, and plenty of mains. We didn't take all-inclusive, which adds lunch and drinks during the day, though the lunch looked excellent and there were lots of drink options. We bought a large water at dinner and shared it between the three of us. Housekeeping came every day, and the hotel, pool, and beach were kept clean, though winter storms made upkeep harder. The walk along the beach path to town's boardwalk and all the way to Balcon de Europa is about 7,000 steps round trip from the room. One issue: the incline from outside by the pool to the lower level gets slippery in rain and needs a slip-resistant surface. My daughter fell twice despite wearing high-traction sneakers. We really enjoyed both visits and highly recommend it.

The food had plenty of choice, and the meats were especially good, particularly chicken and pork. We went at Christmas, so the pool looked lovely but was too cold for most people. The lounge was nice for a daytime or evening drink, and entertainment was available, though we didn't go. We were all-inclusive and had enough drink choices from 10 am until late. Rooms have most of what you need, but the shower over the bath feels dated. My husband and I struggled to get in and out because of mobility issues. The hotel is quite a way from Nerja centre, though it's a lovely walk if you're fit. There's also a bus just outside for 1€ each way, so getting in is no problem.

We had a spacious second-floor room with a big balcony and views of the pool and sea. Nerja is a beautiful place to visit. The hotel is outside town, but the walk along the seafront is lovely; the bus is only 1 euro and taxis cost 8 euros. Check-in left a poor first impression because reception staff weren't friendly. Service was fine, especially considering how busy staff were, and the drinks were okay. The food really wasn't to our taste: bland, cold, tough, and stale.
