We came to Nerja after walking more than 500 kilometers, over 300 miles, on the Camino de Santiago and wanting somewhere quiet to rest. Nerja had been recommended over the other coastal towns of Malaga and Marbella. We had a rental car and briefly stopped in both on the way. As we'd heard, they felt chaotic, very touristy and more pretentious. Nerja was much more pleasant for us. Hotel Paraiso del Mar, at the eastern end of town, was peaceful. The old town shops and restaurants were an easy walk away, and a staircase led down to Playa Burriana. The hotel grounds were beautiful, and the staff were friendly. The small pool never felt crowded, probably because there are only a limited number of rooms, and we always found a lounge chair. From the pool and outdoor patio we could watch beautiful sunrises. The patio is also where breakfast is served, and its unobstructed sea view made the meal especially lovely. The Swedish woman who owns the boutique hotel lives locally and brings in live entertainment once a week. It was great fun for guests and invited locals. We met visitors from around the world, some there for the first time like us, and others who returned regularly. Having an actual mini refrigerator in the room, rather than a wet bar, was a wonderful surprise. The dated decor didn't bother us, but the bathroom setup was a real problem. As far as we could tell, the rooms have large, old jacuzzi tubs instead of showers. We're not bath people. There's a handheld shower head by the tub faucet, but the housekeeper told us not to move it because we'd spray water. For three nights we sat in that huge tub and tried to wash and condition long hair and shave using the faucet. Unfortunately, that's a deal breaker for us. My husband agrees that this was the only negative part of the stay, if you want or expect a shower.

The less positive part of our stay was the service at reception. On arrival we had to call an attendant from the back office to check us in. He was direct but not warm or welcoming, and didn't explain the hotel's amenities or services. He answered our questions about town, though it seemed clear he wanted to end the conversation. A few other representatives were warmer and offered help, but most of the front desk staff gave us about the same level of attention. In other ways, we had an amazing and relaxing stay, and the price felt reasonable for what we got. My wife and I had a second floor room with a balcony and a direct beach view. It was lovely, and the room was clean with housekeeping coming every day. The hotel grounds were beautiful, especially the patio where breakfast was served, with a clear, unobstructed view of the beach. There's a pretty pool and a jacuzzi, and a long stairway down the high cliff gives access to the beach. Just be ready for about 100 steps each way. The buffet breakfast was very good, with eggs, meats, cheeses, bacon, bread, baked goods, fruit, coffee, juices, sweets and other items. The view and setting make it even better. We recommend a balcony room like ours to visitors to Nerja. We won't forget our stay.

We were greeted so warmly as soon as we arrived. The hosts, Johanna, George and the rest of the staff, made our stay feel perfect, and the other guests were lovely too. We loved looking out over the sea, especially while having breakfast on the terrace each morning. The hotel's beautiful entertainment “surprises” touched both my husband's and my heart.

We had a lovely weekend here and absolutely loved the place. The room was tidy and the staff were friendly. They offered us a complimentary drink when we arrived. Breakfast was lovely too. There's a great terrace with a small pool and direct access to Burriana beach.

The views from the rooms and breakfast area are out of this world. The staff are top class, and the night porters are right on the ball when you come back late. Would highly recommend. I'll be back.
