Camping Moby Dick

The location is what makes this place work for me. Calella, llafranc, and the Cami de Ronda are all very well placed from here, and there’s a fabulous Spar just a five-minute walk away. The facilities aren’t luxurious and look like something from the French 80s, but they’re clean and have plenty of hot water. There’s water on each pitch, though the pipes are above ground, so it can get very hot. The pitches are untidy, and the permanent caravans add to that impression.

For 125 euros a night, we got a big tent with a mat, set just 3m from the parking lot. Ants were all over the tent and even on the mat, though we hadn’t brought any food inside. There was nothing to cover up with, and the nights got chilly. The camping is in town between two roads, and the only real plus for me was being within walking distance of the sea and city. The owners weren’t polite; when I returned the key, I got only an “OK,” with no question about how the stay had been. I felt ripped off. We expected glamping from the price and nice pictures, but it was worse than average. The price was like a 3-star hotel, while the camping was below average. The swimming pool is about the size of a hot tub.

The staff were pleasant, and the bar and restaurant were good. The swimming “pool” is in the car park. Space is almost nonexistent because nothing divides the pitches; I was practically one step from either neighbour’s pitch. Our caravan is small, 3.61m plus the A frame, but parked cars along the site roads still made things tight. When another car and caravan came toward us as we were leaving, we had to reverse 50m up the hill. Luckily I could pull onto an empty pitch to let them through. There was also thumping music late at night, once until 02:00.

After 15 years away, I came back to this campsite where I used to holiday as a child. The town still has its old charm, and the bathrooms have been updated. There’s a nice swimming pool too. Our first spot was a bit busy, but we later moved to a better one with more privacy and a sea view. We stayed longer here than anywhere else on our holiday. The one downside was that someone stole one of our power banks from the bathrooms. I’d really recommend camping here 🫶.
