Hostal Rural Peñas

A small place, and breakfast was very basic: toast and donuts.

I was sent to this Hostal because the place I’d booked didn’t have Wi-Fi. I was working and was counting on being able to get dinner, but there was nothing to eat in the evening. They only opened at midday. I asked if breakfast could be brought forward by half an hour, and they did that for me. The room was fine on the first day, though it took a very long time for hot water to come through. Breakfast was ordinary. When I came back for my second night, the bathroom was flooded. It was an accessible bathroom, and there was a huge puddle between me and the toilet. I called, and they told me those bathrooms were cleaned that way. I said that wasn’t true, since my mother has one at home. They said they’d ask the husband to come and see it, but nobody showed up. The next morning, halfway through my coffee at breakfast, I found a paper wrapper from another service inside the cup. I didn’t finish breakfast. When I went to pay, the card terminal wasn’t working. I just wanted to get out of there, so I copied down the bank account number and left as quickly as I could. I don’t plan to return.

The owners made us feel right at home. They were exceptionally kind and attentive throughout our stay, and the place was very clean and well maintained. Our room had air conditioning, heating, TV, Wi-Fi, a nice bathroom, a terrace, and great views. Breakfast was spectacular, with unlimited refills and options for vegans and people with gluten or lactose intolerance. The setting is peaceful, and it’s well placed for visiting Pedraza, the Duratón River Gorge, Segovia, or simply getting away for a weekend with family and friends. The quality for the price is among the best in the area. We’d happily return any time of year. Definitely recommended.

The breakfast was the highlight: coffee and juice with a donut, toast, and a huge croissant, and you could have more. It was delicious. The hostel was very clean and in good condition, with friendly, polite staff. Our room had air conditioning, shampoo and soap, a shower, and a great balcony. The towels were quite worn, and the bar downstairs was closed, maybe because it was August. Still, highly recommended.
