The spa was small but had a good setup, with dry and wet saunas, contrast showers, and a little circuit. Staff throughout the hotel were kind and attentive. We also liked relaxing in the cloister with a chat or a glass of wine, especially since few local places, if any, stay open late. We spent three nights at AZZ Peñafiel Las Claras, a peaceful place with comfortable, accessible facilities. Our room was spacious and bright, with comfy beds and plenty of room for luggage. It came with a safe, minibar fridge, hairdryer, and a good selection of toiletries, including gel, shampoo, conditioner, and body milk. The hotel was impeccably clean and well maintained, and the tasteful furnishings preserve the charm of the former monastery. Breakfast had plenty of choice: fresh fruit, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, bread, pastries, cereals, a few hot items like eggs and bacon, and a self-service coffee machine. A couple of things could be better. The room TVs aren’t smart TVs, and there aren’t many spare pillows or cushions. There’s a walk-in shower in the bathroom, but the bidet sits right by the entrance, leaving very little room to get in or out. That could be a real obstacle for guests with mobility issues.

The swimming pool was much appreciated, and the wine domains around here are great. It was still a good experience, though the place felt quite pricey for the quality of both the service and the restaurant option.

The courtyard bar was lovely in the early evening, and the location is perfect, with the castle towering over the town. The restored old monastery is beautiful, quiet, and cool, with a very nice atrium. Our room was huge, but could have used another armchair and a basic waste bin. Apart from that, the hotel and breakfast were perfect.

We booked rooms at AZZ Penafiel Las Claras from July 6th to July 9th for my husband, our daughter, two friends, a mother and daughter, and me to attend the DWC competition. Shortly before the trip, military actions began in our country, so we made the difficult but necessary choice to withdraw the children from the competition and asked the hotel to cancel our reservation. We heard nothing back. We were also charged twice for the rooms. For over a month, we’ve tried to contact the hotel to find out why and get the issue resolved, but still haven’t received a reply. We sincerely hope the AZZ hotel chain respects its customers and takes its reputation seriously enough to respond and sort this out. We hope we haven’t misplaced our trust.
