The hotel feels very dated and the basics were disappointing. There were no towels in the room, it smelled of urine, and food smells from what seemed to be a kitchen vent nearby drifted in late at night. The shower could suddenly turn scalding hot. The linen and room were clean, but very basic, with concrete ceilings, and stains on the wall beside the bed. I wouldn’t recommend it. Guests are charged £130 to use the pool for just 90 minutes, even when nobody else was using it. The indoor pool and steam room cost another £100. At around £450 a night for a 4-star hotel, I expected it to feel luxurious.

The hotel sits in an incredible gorge beside a fast flowing river, so the dramatic scenery is a real draw. The building itself feels a little tired and could use renovation, and the staff can take a few days to warm up to you. Roadworks are currently underway on the only road to the hotel. They’re expected to cause delays for about 12 months from the time of writing. Traffic is light and managed efficiently, though, so that shouldn’t put you off.

The outdoor thermal spa experience was amazing. There are lots of pools to pick from, each at a different temperature. I’d recommend going on a colder day since all the pools are warm.

The thermoludic circuit was included in the room price and was truly incredible. We also tried the outdoor caves at night, which was such a neat experience. La Hermida has a gorgeous setting, and the staff were lovely and very accommodating. Our room and bathroom were quite large and comfortable. One of the most memorable stays of our three-week vacation. Highly recommend.
