Hotel JS PortoColom Suites

The pool was large and had a lifeguard on duty all the time. We visited off peak, so there were plenty of sunbeds, though I imagine it could get crowded during school holidays. The gym was very basic, had just one treadmill, and the air conditioning was never on. The treadmill's incline setting was faulty. Portocolom is peaceful and lovely, but it seems better for families or people who want a quiet holiday. There's not much to do beyond walking, and Cala Marçal is the only nearby beach. It's pretty but small. If you're more interested in exploring the city, shops and restaurants, staying closer to Palma may work better. The room was basic, with no tea or coffee facilities, so I'd bring a travel kettle to avoid the rental charge. The bed was comfortable and the shower had strong pressure. The views weren't great, and rooms or balconies facing the main roads and games area could be noisy, with people playing air hockey, snooker and claw machines. The WiFi was terrible, so I used mobile data most of the time. The room TV and phone didn't work at all. The only working TV was in the suite lounge, mounted so high on the wall that you'd have to strain your neck. Cleanliness was concerning in a few ways. The towels looked as if they hadn't been washed properly, the bedding wasn't changed, and ants were gathering in different corners and crevices. When we told the front desk, the staff member wasn't surprised and suggested there wasn't much they could do, implying the ants were drawn to food, even though we had nothing left out and kept fruit in the mini-fridge. We asked about changing rooms, but she said ants were unavoidable on every floor, which was a red flag. The cleaner apparently treated the area with the most activity, but we still spotted a couple on the sofa and along the counter. Breakfast had little variety, was nearly the same every day, and was all cold. Dinner wasn't much better. The chefs cooked fresh fish daily, but it was bland, as was the rest of the food. This isn't a hotel for foodies who like trying new things. Overall, our stay at JS Portocolom Suites was disappointing for a place recognized as a four-star hotel.

The pool was spacious and always clean, and seeing the lifeguard keep a close eye on things made us feel comfortable letting the kids swim. The hotel is well maintained, the food was good with lots of choice, and the location was excellent. We had a very positive stay and would definitely recommend it.

We waited three hours to have dinner, as our bus was meant to pick us up shortly afterwards. Then they simply told us we couldn't eat unless we paid €20 per person. Nobody had even told us we could no longer have dinner before that. I've never experienced anything like it, and this is absolutely not a hotel I can recommend.

The views are lovely, and the hotel is close to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But it's a full hour from the airport, the staff aren't very helpful, and the rooms are tiny. The air conditioning barely works, so taking a hot shower feels like a death sentence for anyone sharing the room. I'd consider somewhere closer to palma.
