Hotel Casa Vieja

The beds weren’t anything special, and the wifi was slow, but that’s par for the course in these small towns. Everything else made for a really wonderful stay. It’s a beautiful, quiet local spot, with an amazing dog and a horse. The owner went out of his way to make my birthday special: he set up a firepit for us, then his friend came by and grilled fresh pork ribs over it for dinner. The coffee is the best in town, apparently drawing people from other towns too.

Jorge makes you feel at home. He’s welcoming, takes you around, and gives you dinner recommendations. The morning coffee is the best in town too.

Our stay was one of the worst I’ve had. My husband, our two children, and I were there in summer, and it felt surreal from start to finish. After a long drive, we arrived tired and hot to find the door locked and no way to reach Jorge, the owner. We called again and again without an answer, so we had to go to another town to get food and drink while waiting for someone to turn up. Getting inside didn’t make things better. They only take cash, and the prices seemed arbitrary and out of proportion to how basic and neglected the place was. From what we saw, it was by far the most expensive place in the area with the worst service. Their refusal to accept cards also raised serious doubts for us about whether the establishment was legal. The beds were uncomfortable and you sank into them, and the sheets smelled musty, as if they hadn’t been washed. On top of that, the owner seemed to be under the influence of alcohol or some other substance. He behaved inappropriately and used foul language, especially with the children there, making the stay even more unpleasant. We’d never return or recommend it.

We stayed at Casa Vieja this weekend. Jorge was fantastic and treated us incredibly well, like family. The house was very clean, comfortable, and warm. I highly recommend it.
