Hotel Roses Platja

When I was walking my dog by the restaurant at Hotel Roses Platja, he started sniffing the grass. I hadn’t seen a sign saying dogs weren’t allowed. A man working there came out onto the restaurant terrace and shouted homophobic slurs at us. We called the hotel to report it, but the person who answered hung up instead of taking the complaint seriously. This discriminatory, unprofessional behavior is unacceptable. LGBTQIA+ travelers should avoid this place. Disgusting.

It’s easy for me to eat here despite my food intolerances and not eating animal products except fish. The staff are helpful when I explain what I need, and the food is good value, with a nice buffet and breakfast. The cleaners are a lovely bunch, and 99% of the workers are kind, thoughtful, and friendly. It was nice to see such a diverse staff too. I love how comfortable this old-style hotel feels. If you’re tired of cold, white-walled boutique places, this has spacious, clean rooms and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s central and close to the bus stop from Barcelona, but not noisy. From the front garden there’s direct beach access, plus shady spots to sit when the sun gets too strong. The tree-lined sea views from a front room with a balcony are amazing, and you can hear the sea. The moon shines in front of the hotel and lights up the water below. Even the old, fast elevators add to the building’s charm, and I love the music in them. Great value for the price. I think I’ve found my place to return to every year.

A male waiter from the hotel restaurant just shouted vile insults at us because my dog stepped on a patch of grass near the beach. I hadn’t seen a sign saying it was private or that dogs weren’t allowed. Even if there had been one, that behavior was still unjustifiable. When I called the hotel, a woman at reception hung up as soon as I explained what happened. We came to this town to rest, but now we feel shaken, stressed, and unsafe. The hotel isn’t taking this seriously, so LGBTQ+ people should avoid staying here when visiting Costa Brava.

I’ve stayed here a couple of times and enjoyed being right on the beach. It’s a great traditional hotel, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms have an old-fashioned feel. The central air conditioning has weak airflow, the fridge barely cools anything, and the bathroom is a bit dated for a modern traveler. Still, I often come down to Roses and would stay here again.
