The spa is really the reason to come, and the hotel and its grounds look and feel lovely. The chapel experience was a highlight, though the advertised hour and a half includes a half hour foam experience. That part was nice, but I wanted more time in the sauna. There’s only one sauna, in the chapel, which seems like a big oversight. The pools were nice, but they were all just warm. A hotter one would have been welcome. My wife also enjoyed two days of spa treatments, and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms were spacious enough and well appointed. We had a good stay, but eating at the “restaurant” was a letdown. The nicer restaurant was closed while we were there. The open one was wildly overpriced and the food quality was all over the place. My wife’s fish with tomato sauce had barely any seasoning, while mine was so salty it was almost inedible. The potatoes “our way” were mushy and blah. The eggs were excellent, though, and I could eat them all day. The house wine was fine and well priced. One thing to keep in mind, the hotel doesn’t connect to the highway. Restaurants and wineries that look nearby on the map can be 30 minutes away because you have to backtrack. Still, we had a lovely time, especially for the spa and the look and feel of the hotel.

The hotel is pleasant enough, but I didn’t feel the price matched what was offered. The spa is nicely designed, though it isn’t especially large or remarkable compared with similar places. The Luxury, Suite and Junior Suite categories also seem like unnecessary distinctions, mostly there to justify higher prices rather than mark meaningful differences. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

We went for a weekend in the wine region and had a genuinely great stay. The hotel is a historic monastery, and the place itself, the service and the staff were captivating. We also thought the restaurant was quite good. We didn’t get to the spa because we spent our time visiting local wineries, though from the photos and what other guests have said, it looks worth checking out. I’m still giving it five stars because we enjoyed the experience so much. Compared with other five-star hotels, though, I’d put this one at a 4+ or a five with a small minus. The renovation’s design, furniture and materials weren’t quite top-tier, but the rest of the experience made up for that.

Carlota, the concierge, made our stay especially nice. She helped arrange winery visits, spa appointments and a lovely lunch at Molino de Palacios. She was wonderful to work with and lovely to meet in person. For a stay in the Ribera del Duero, Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena is an easy choice. The hotel is beautiful, the spa is wonderful, and the location is perfect.

The village itself doesn’t have much to see, but the spa and massages make the trip worthwhile. It’s a beautiful five-star hotel, with large, stunning rooms, lovely interiors and great restaurants.
