Apartamentos Capriccio

A nice place.

The location is excellent for a family visit with children. We went in August, two adults and two kids, and had a fine stay. It's right by the entrance to Santillana, handy for heading in after a long day of sightseeing. There are spaces right outside, included in the price, which is appreciated since parking in Santillana is practically impossible. They're in high demand, though. There's also an underground garage for 6 or 9 euros a day, which can be a lifesaver. The rooms are clean, though there's no room service, and they're not very spacious but adequate. We had two single beds for the couple and a sofa bed for the children. The metal bed frames and poor quality mattresses left me with terrible muscle tension by day two. There could have been more pillows too. The small kitchenette is fine for breakfast, but it takes ages to boil water. The utensils are clearly well used, and although clean, they're not very non-stick. The knife was so dull I couldn't cut my tomatoes. The TV was just for show, the remote was broken and there was no signal. The bathroom shower is small but does the job. A more modern shower screen and shower head would cost next to nothing. The toilet paper comes in 10cm strips, so after a lot of mountain stew, be prepared to wait. One other thing, the courtyard facing apartments share space with a laundry room, and an extractor fan seems to run 25 hours a day, making an annoying noise. With the windows shut it's not a problem, but in summer it's really bothersome. For the price and location, it does the job.

The common areas are clean and well looked after, and the staff were very friendly and pleasant. Our room was simple, basic, and spacious, and very, very clean, although it could use some updating. The bathroom extractor is quite loud when the light is on, and the fridge is noisy too. We had to turn it off at night so we wouldn't hear it when trying to sleep. There aren't many luxuries, but it's perfectly acceptable for a few days.

We were comfortable during our six-night, seven-day stay as a couple, booked through Booking.com. I wouldn't rate it higher because a few things were missing. Our apartment faced the street, which was fine since there were also interior units. The bathroom was great, clean, with hot water, shower gel, a hairdryer, and no complaints. The kitchen was generally good too, and they left a new cloth and scouring pad as a courtesy. The kitchenware was fine, and the fridge got very cold, but we missed having a freezer. Some days could use air conditioning. There was a fan available from reception if any were left. Since we were on the ground floor, we weren't comfortable leaving the easily accessible terrace door open. You could hear everything, both inside and between terraces, though earplugs helped us manage. Patricia at reception deserves a mention. She was friendly throughout, gave us great suggestions for dinner one night, and made everything easy. She was available and professional. A good stay, with a few details to sort out.
