The location made exploring easy, on a narrow street with homes and shops and plenty of restaurants nearby. I was glad to stay in Santo Domingo de la Calzada while my knees and feet recovered. I booked at the last minute and was happy to get one of the balcony rooms. It was bright, clean, and delightful. At check-in, a lovely woman found my name in the register, checked my ID, handed over the keys and door codes, and suggested putting my luggage in the lift to make things easier. When I reached the second floor, I pressed the call button and she brought my bag up. So clever! For a coffee, chocolates, or a “Bilbao Butter Bun” Bollos de Mantequilla, I recommend nearby Pastry Shop (El Buen Gusto).

The WiFi was weak and the TV looked very outdated. As a facilities and maintenance engineer, I thought the hotel was poorly maintained. For what I paid, it wasn’t worth it. I’d have been happy paying half that price.

The host wasn’t very talkative, but he was nice. He even washed, dried, and folded our clothes. We’d stay again. We were pilgrims and appreciated having our own clean, neat room and WC. It was quiet, close to the cathedral and lots of bars and restaurants. I’m not sure what to make of the previous ratings, because we had a good stay. The bakery around the corner is worth checking out, the sweets were delicious.

The location was outstanding, right by the cathedral and good restaurants, and it made exploring Santo Domingo de la Calzada very convenient. I stayed at Hostal La Catedral during my Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The room was spacious and comfortable. There was no breakfast service or reception, but messages were answered quickly and efficiently. It’s a charming city, too.

The owner is very unfriendly and unhelpful. We couldn’t get an answer when we first tried to be let in, and our suitcases had been moved and locked next door because he didn’t have enough staff. We couldn’t even shower without them. I asked whether the neighbors holding the bags were definitely coming that day, but he just shrugged, said it wasn’t his problem, and offered no help or reassurance. He ruined our stay in this beautiful little city. I strongly suggest not staying here!
