Inside, the old fashioned furniture and large, exceptional spaces make the building feel cozy and comfortable. This is a four story hotel in a former 12th century hospital for Camino pilgrims, where medical assistance was provided. It was adapted into a 4 star Parador. The Cathedral stands opposite, with Santo Domingo Saint buried there, and the surrounding area is the historic city centre.

The staff were nice and tried to help, but they were overwhelmed. The hotel was packed with tourists because it’s close to the Santiago trail, and there weren’t enough staff to handle it all. Our Superior Rooms were large, but lacked things like a coffee and tea station and bottled water, which we’d had at other “4 star” paradors. We couldn’t get a restaurant reservation for either of the 2 nights we stayed. Buyer beware, book the hotel restaurant ahead if you can, or pay for half or full board when reserving your room. We’ve stayed in more than 10 different Paradors, and this was the first time we had these problems. This 4 star Parador doesn’t earn its stars like many of the others we’ve visited. What’s going on? Is Spain cutting back and hiring more staff? The strain takes a toll on both staff and customers.

There are two Paradors in town, so make sure you don’t mix them up. I’d also ask for a room facing the interior courtyard, unless you don’t mind hearing service doors bang at dawn. This was my first stay in a Parador, and I liked how much Camino history the place holds. The room was clean, the bed was generous, and even details like thick towels and soft lighting made a tired pilgrim feel that comfort belongs on the road. The staff were genuinely warm, not just formally polite, as if they’d welcomed lots of tired walkers and still saw you as a person. The breakfast buffet had plenty to linger over. I didn’t try the restaurant, though it looked like a place for a treat after a long trek or heartbreak. The bar team were great, too. When I asked for ice for my knee, they filled a bag without fuss. The lounge was plush and comfortable, with a big TV that made the World Cup or a local derby feel important again. Four stars from me because the Camino spirit feels softened by linen napkins and polished stone. It isn’t raw, but sometimes comfort is exactly what you need.

The building is lovely and its history is easy to see throughout. Service was efficient and courteous, the room was nice, and our twin beds were very comfortable. The bathroom had a shower, a bath, and a heated floor. Our Camino booking included an excellent buffet breakfast. There’s a good bar for late night vino and coffee. We didn’t try the restaurant, which opens at 8.30pm. A superb hotel, thank you.

We’ve returned for a second visit and the Parador is still as wonderful as before, five stars in every respect. The restaurant often seems to be fully booked for dinner, which is inconvenient but gives you the chance to try one of the many restaurants in town. Parking in the underground garage costs extra, but with our soft top sports car we thought it was well worth it.
