Hotel Can Calco

The view was good, but the whole experience left me unwilling to recommend this place, even after a lot of discussion and a discount. Communication was difficult because there seemed to be a long chain between the hotel staff on site and other staff elsewhere. The phone connection was poor, and no one replied to our email. Our reservation started a day earlier than we meant it to, so we didn’t use the room that first night. Luckily it was still available the next day and we could stay, but the hotel couldn’t tell us the price for that extra night at the time. Later, after dinner, they said they wanted to charge the single-night rate, which was much more than the rate for the two previous nights. It made me feel like I should pay for a coffee the moment I order it, before taking a sip. Dinner was neither good nor bad, maybe a little below average.

This isn’t really a hotel, just rental rooms. They don’t clean during your stay, and there’s no reception, cafe, or bar. We got a rustic room with a nice view of the Tramuntana mountains, but that was about the only good thing about the accommodation. The water comes from what looks like a cistern in the lounge. Its lid was open and the water is pumped up, so it probably isn’t safe to drink. Nobody told us that, and there wasn’t even complimentary bottled water, which seems like the least they could provide. The next morning, the power company cut the electricity from nine to eleven. Staff said they knew nothing about it, but later we saw a notice from the power company on the reception table that had been posted well in advance. Since the water is pumped up to the rooms, we had no water during the outage either. They charge four-star hotel prices for poorly maintained rooms, even though the hotel is fifty meters away. Not warning guests that the room water may not be drinkable is grounds for a complaint. When you go somewhere like this, you want to relax, not risk making yourself ill. That was what kept the owner from facing a lawsuit. The views, the bar in the town square, and the local people were the best parts.
