I was surprised by the freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast. At checkout, I spoke, or mostly gestured because of the language barrier, with an older man who may have been one of the owners. He kindly asked where I was headed and gave me suggestions for stops, along with directions he drew by hand. If I’d met him on the first day, maybe I’d have felt differently about the stay. I’ve had much better stays for the same price in other small towns. The staff seemed tired and unfriendly, perhaps because it was Sunday. The first-floor restaurant smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. My room was lovely, comfortable, and clean, with an amazing view of the square. The shower was ridiculous, with a seat and hundreds of massage nozzles. It took me a while to work out, and even as a thin 34-year-old I had a hard time fitting in with the seat there. Something simpler would look cleaner and nicer.

The town is stunningly beautiful, and the hotel is nice, well located, with very helpful staff. We went at the end of August without realizing it was right in the middle of the town festivities. Be prepared for parties and parades that may go on much of the night. There was a parade at 5 in the morning twice, so we slept fewer hours than we’d hoped. That wasn’t the hotel’s fault.

We’ve stayed here twice and would come again, which says it all. The people running it are lovely, even though they speak virtually no English, and why should they? The rooms are great, a bit small, kept clean, and look out onto wonderful historic streets. The beer’s cold, and the menu del dia is superb. Go for the hake. Totally recommend it.

We came in for a vino and were completely ignored, as though we weren’t there. Everyone else got served first. We eventually gave up and found a far better bar just 200 metres away. Very unprofessional.

We only stopped for lunch, and it was great. The menu del dia used high-quality ingredients and everything was very tasty. Service was quick, and the location under the arches of the main square, right in the town center, is superb.
