The setting is lovely, surrounded by farmland with the smell of hay in the air. The rooms are simple and beautiful, the building looks good inside and out, and the owner really tries to help. The restaurant was another plus, and the one-night price we paid was great. It was very quiet in early September, with just one other room occupied, so at times it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The water has a very strong rotten egg smell across the property, probably because it’s rich in sulphur, perhaps from a spring there. You notice it when washing your hands or showering, and the smell fills the room. That really needs to be sorted out, especially as I’ve since seen other reviews mention it. Maybe a filter or some kind of on-site water treatment could help. When my husband sat on the bed, about five tiny spiders ran across it. We stripped the bed and found more in the frame, along with cobwebs and egg sacs under the bed, so it seemed that area hadn’t been cleaned for a while. The owner said spiders can happen in the countryside, which I understand. He reacted right away, sprayed the frame with Insectacide, admitted it should have been cleaned better, and started sweeping to show the rest of the room was clean. It isn’t really a complaint about spiders, and he jumped into action as soon as we told him. The shower can only be held by hand because there’s no bracket to hold it up, so you have to soap up, turn it off, then rinse yourself with the shower head. There are no glasses in the bathroom for mouthwash, though there is a hairdryer and good mirrors. The rooms have no air conditioning, but the ceiling fan was powerful, quiet, and ideal for us. There are radiators for winter, a little back garden for each room, and patio doors opening onto it. The windows have mosquito nets, so you can leave them open without worrying about mosquitoes. I assume the spiders got in under the front door. There’s also secure parking on the property. This feels like a new venture for the owner, and I’d really like it to work because the building and rooms are so lovely. He sorted out the problems we raised, but the water smell needs attention. The property has a lot of potential, and I hope he fixes those issues because I’d like to come back for the setting and rooms. Don’t read my review and focus only on the spiders. That can happen at a quiet countryside place and is easy to deal with. The property is magical, in a great and unusual location, the rooms look even better than the online photos, and the price is great. Sort out the water and add a few small things like drinking glasses and a high shower bracket, and you’ve got a winner.
