Cortijo El Pozuelo

Giorgina was so welcoming, and Paqui keeps the rooms and shared facilities in great shape. We stayed in a double room that felt like home, in a rebuilt Cortijo with a lovely interior patio and a huge area to relax. There’s a shared kitchen and fridge where you can make all your meals, and if you’re lucky you might get one of the two eggs the chickens lay each day. It’s about a 35-minute walk into Tarifa, or five minutes by car. If you want to stay outside town but close enough to get in easily, this works well. Kite surfers will also be closer to the spots.

You get a private room and bathroom, with a shared kitchen. From here, Tarifa is an easy 30-40 minute walk, and you can also head straight to the beach. It’s really convenient. The surroundings are peaceful and restful, full of plants and light, and the people are so friendly. I’d absolutely recommend booking directly with them.

The best part of Cortijo El Pozuelo is the warm atmosphere Manuel and his assistant Sarah have created. They make you feel at home, and I appreciated how open and generous they were with their hospitality. It’s a rustic rural dwelling, but it also has some of the comforts of a nice hotel. We extended our trip and stayed in two rooms. The first was very nice and comfortable, while the second was exceptional, huge, and had two easy chairs and a tiled walk-in shower with sprays all around. Both rooms were very clean. There’s a shared living-room area with coffee, croissants, and other snacks, plus fresh eggs from the property itself. You can sit and relax there or around the grounds. If the internet is weak in your room, you can use the common area instead. There’s a kitchen, outdoor grills, and a microwave/convection oven in the room. Pipa, the owner’s dog, wanders around and happily welcomes pets. The property is a short walk from a natural area, with a boardwalk that takes you toward the beach and into town. It took us about an hour to walk, though it may be quicker at a faster pace. We didn’t mind because the route was lovely, with beach views. We had a rental car for exploring and getting into town quickly, and I think that’s the best option. Tarifa is nearby and feels young and modern. Verger de la Frontera is 48 km away and worth a day trip. The nearby beaches, including Bolonia, are delightful, and the ancient Roman ruins are fascinating and only a short drive away. I keep coming back to the Cortijo’s welcoming feel, and I congratulate Manuel and Sarah on what they’ve made here.

The shared living and dining room and kitchen were nice, and the atmosphere was friendly. It takes around a 10-15 minute walk to reach the kite spot on the beach.
