We spent five happy weeks at Refugio Yuco, walking in the volcanic National Park and sightseeing around the country. The house is spacious and well equipped, with a secluded garden, in a small village centrally located for exploring the island. You do need a hire car. There’s no bar or cafe in the village, though three good restaurants are within a 10 minute drive. One issue: the shower floor is dangerously slippery and could do with an extra non slip bath mat.

The property is gorgeous, but the shower floor is extremely dangerous, even though it looks beautiful. I slipped while showering and nearly broke my ribs. Also, the neighbours have roosters that you can hear all day and a few times at night. This isn’t mentioned in any of the ads.

You’ll absolutely need a car to explore the island. The apartment is well furnished, in a very quiet village, and has a beautiful succulent garden.

The garbage truck came around 4 a.m. every morning. The whole house was filthy, and we had to clean the kitchen ourselves. Never again. One star is too much.
