You let yourself in using the room and entrance keys kept in a combination safe on the outside wall. The instructions came by email in Spanish. There’s no reception, just a list of phone numbers, and during our one night stay I didn’t see or speak to any staff. We’ve stayed here eight times over the past six years, but I’m afraid we won’t be back.

From our ground-floor room near reception, we could hear everything going on there at night. We could also hear people in nearby rooms and upstairs talking, showering, and moving things around.

Getting into Madrid takes around 30 to 40 minutes by bus, and even longer by metro, so it’s not a great base if you don’t have a car and like going out at night. I spent five nights there in late March, though, and found it a calm, quiet, inexpensive place for exploring the area around Madrid and getting a feel for village life in Spain. The people working there were friendly and helpful. If you’re curious and up for exploring local life, el mirador vale la pena.
