After reading reviews that have raised the same issues for years, I doubt my comments will make a difference. Still, I want to be fair, because holiday season in Basqueland makes finding accommodation difficult. On our road trip through north-west Spain, we stayed in several average places costing over 250 a night. To get something better, it seemed you had to spend over 500, and even then there was no guarantee you'd be satisfied. I refused to pay that much when I know what the same money can get elsewhere in Europe, so we ended up at Balneario de Cestona. With a little more attention to maintenance, cleanliness, service, and food presentation, places like this could be pleasant stays. Guests might accept some seasonal overpricing if they left feeling good about their visit. It's a real shame that doesn't seem to happen here. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I doubt I'll ever return to Balneario de Cestona.

We had to change rooms because there was mold in the shower in the first one. The bathrooms were gross, and the rooms small. Hygiene was mediocre at best: trash sat around the hotel for all four days of our stay, and there were spider webs. It's sad to see a hotel that used to be grand so worn down after years without renovation. The food was the one good part, though good food is pretty much a given in this area. Sorry, but I can't recommend it.

The historic building is beautiful, and the renovated thermal circuits had just been completed. Staff were extremely helpful, and the full pension plan included abundant, excellent food. It's a great area for walking. My room had a large, separate closet area, good heating, and was clean, simple, and adequate.

The photos give the wrong impression. The place needs serious renovation and maintenance: the room smelled moldy, and the beds were horribly uncomfortable, with springs sticking out. Some advertised features weren't available, including laundry and a restaurant. The spa also had to be booked in advance, but there was no availability during our stay. We tried calling all day before our stay to reserve it, but nobody answered. We paid $220 for one night. At that price, I wouldn't stay again. Maybe at $39.99. I know old buildings can have quirks like uneven stairs and creaky floors, but this felt like there simply haven't been enough staff to maintain the place over the years.

Pretty expensive for such an old place. There was no bed sheet, the toilet was leaking, the room could've been much cleaner, and there was no Wi-Fi.
