Itzurun Gain - Basque Stay

The location is perfect, and Room 204, probably others too :), has a wonderful view over this beautiful beach. It’s so peaceful that you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The room and spa were okay, though both could use a proper polish. Breakfast hit the spot, but for a proper coffee and croissant, I’d suggest going into Zumaia. The hotel could use a good scrub.

The ocean view and peaceful setting are lovely, but the hotel is overpriced, and the rooms don’t look like the photos. I’d booked an ocean-view room with a large bed, but they gave me one with two small beds instead. Reception was closed when I arrived, so I couldn’t raise it until the next morning. The receptionist said no room change was possible, even though the room I’d booked was available next door. I pointed out the problem and was offered the option of writing a formal letter to the manager, but nothing was done while I was there. There was no compensation or even an apology, and nobody followed up after my stay. The staff weren’t very helpful, and the lack of care really affected what was meant to be a relaxing trip.

The hotel sits on a hill, so it may not work for people with limited mobility. Its location is amazing, and although the room is very small, I think it’s good value for money. I didn’t try the thalasso, so I can’t comment on it.

We hadn’t known Zumaia or this place before our stay, but it turned out to be one of our best ever. Now we can’t wait to come back.
