Finlandia Park Hotel Helsinki

The sauna and pool area were lovely, and Käpylä is a very cozy area. The place itself was nice, though quite basic, with little interior design or art. All in all, a nice experience.

The breakfast was a real highlight, especially the waffles you can make yourself, and the prices were affordable compared with other Helsinki hotels. The location worked well too, with a bus and tram stop about a minute away and the airport train roughly a ten-minute walk. It was quiet at night, never felt crowded, and was reasonably clean and family friendly. The room felt old and bare, though. There was a desk and office chair but no sofa, recliner, luggage space or wall decorations, and the hard floor felt cold and made the room echo a little. The air felt stale and the room got uncomfortably hot in sunshine. The building is worn, and the outside and upper-floor windows were very dirty. There’s no elevator, so luggage means taking the stairs. Reception also closes overnight, around 10 on Sundays and 11 on weekdays, if I remember right, and opens at 7. Once checked in, the key card does let you in after hours. Good value overall, mainly for the food and price, but the room was the weak point.

The reception welcome felt pretty odd. The clerk or clerks seemed more interested in formally filling out the check-in details.

Breakfast was the strongest part of my stay, with better quality and more choice than I expected. The croissants were among the best five I’ve had. Staff were helpful without making a fuss, and the peaceful area was easy to reach by car, with public transport nearby. A lingering musty smell in the room was hard to ignore, even with the nice green tea hand soap in the bathroom. The gym and sauna were available only at limited times, which didn’t work very well for my short visit, though they’d be a welcome extra when accessible. For the price, I thought the hotel was decent value.
