The heated bathroom floors and super-comfy bed were great, and breakfast was an amazingly tasty buffet. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and the lighting and redesign of the place were lovely. I’m Canadian with Finnish descent, and a friend recommended Home Hotel. I was a little apprehensive when I heard it used to be a jail, but everything turned out amazing. It’s only a 5-10 minute walk to Helsinki’s tourist area, yet far enough away to be peaceful and super quiet. A 10/10 stay. Highly recommend this one!
The meals and evening snack were a great deal for the price, and I’d come back or recommend this place to anyone visiting Helsinki. It’s budget-friendly, and I don’t know another place that includes two meals plus a snack. If I could give it 10 stars, I would, but Google only allows 5 :) I stayed six nights earlier this week. The hotel is a bit away from Helsinki Central Station, but close to Market Square and right by the Port of Helsinki. The tram stops outside and goes to both the city center and Market Square, so getting around is easy. Breakfast had 25 plus items. The evening fika, a Swedish name for a snack with coffee, was great, and dinner was comforting, with dishes like beef casserole, shrimp, or lasagna, plus good soup, plenty of bread, and coffee. Housekeeping isn’t daily unless you’re staying multiple nights, but I didn’t need it because I try to be eco-friendly. The front desk and kitchen staff were awesome. My room was small, but that didn’t matter since I was traveling solo. There’s a supermarket, an alcohol store, and a couple of bars about 400 meters away, plus a great Indian restaurant called Swad for anyone craving Asian food.
We stayed in early June 2026 and couldn’t have asked for a better visit. The rooms were spacious and quiet, and both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The staff were friendly and professional. Highly recommend this hotel.
At a fine Finnish hotel like this, evening sauna time shouldn’t be so hard to get. You can only book 24 hours ahead, not earlier, and both the day I arrived and the following day were already fully booked. I had a day trip to Tallin, so I couldn’t get back in time to make a reservation. That booking system isn’t ideal.
Turning an old prison into a hotel is a brilliant idea. The place has lots of character, and its history alongside the comfort makes for a genuinely special stay. I was there for two nights and had an amazing time.
