Hotel Ukkohalla

We spent a few wonderful, peaceful days in the Ukkohalla sky glass cabins, in such a lovely setting, and even saw the Northern Lights. I'll never forget this holiday ❤️ I'd highly recommend the place.

The sky cabins were beautiful, and the resort was fantastic. Great activities, amazing staff, and skiing that was just right for beginners. Highly recommend ☺️

Set beside Lake Syväjärvi beneath the highest ridges of Arctic Lakeland, Ukkohalla Resort has a peaceful lakeside setting in the Hyrynsalmi region of Kainuu. Kajaani is about 90 km north, Oulu 170 km east, and Kuusamo 180 km south. There are plenty of places to stay, from holiday apartments and chalets to log villas, alpine-style cabins, and cottages. Some apartments are right beside the slopes, with private saunas and balconies or terraces, in 45 m² or 63 m² layouts. The Sky Cabin Glass Suites sit above the slopes, with glass fronts for stargazing and northern lights viewing from indoors. The Sauna World & Spa has themed saunas, indoor and outdoor pools, and jacuzzis, with lake views. In winter, there are 15 groomed downhill slopes, three snow parks, and up to five lifts. Cross-country tracks cover 114 km, including 12 km with lighting. Families and beginners have options such as the rope tow, Sompahissi, Kurumelli family slope, Junior Snow Park, and Jib Snow Park. There are also a sledding hill, a kota warming hut, swings, and sledge and Zipfy sled rentals. In summer, activities include cable wakeboarding at Halla Wake Park, 150 km of mountain biking trails with fat-bike rentals, paddleboarding, SUP, disc golf, and swimming. The resort says it uses renewable energy, efficient snowmaking, recycling, and carbon reduction measures. You can get there by car, train, or air, and there is a winter SkiBus from Oulu. It seems suited to families, groups, solo travelers, wellness seekers, and people who like outdoor sports, with a range of accommodation and activities across the seasons.

January was almost empty, so there were no queues, and the slopes were varied and cheap. The instructors were very attentive, activities were VERY GOOD, and everyone provided excellent service. There wasn't as much snow as usual, but for us as novices it was excellent for beginners, or anyone wanting plenty of room to improve. Fingers crossed we make it back next January 🙏 Shouldn't say too much, it's an absolute gem of a find.
