Balder Luxury Lodge & Glass Igloos

The evenings by the fireplace were a simple pleasure: a glass of wine, chatting with other guests, while the kids built a snow fort, went sledding, or played chess nearby. The family activities suited us perfectly too, from snowmobiling and reindeer and husky rides to snowshoeing. We spent four nights at The Balder over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and it exceeded what we expected from a family that travels a lot. The welcome felt like being invited into someone’s home, and the food was among the best we’ve had at a hotel. Victor puts real heart and intention into his menus. It was a magical, comfortable Arctic stay. I wish we’d booked a fifth night, and would recommend it to friends and family.

Watching the northern lights from bed in the glass igloo was a one-of-a-kind experience, thanks to the glass at the front and overhead. We stayed there one night, then moved into the main building to a room with a private sauna. This brand-new hotel has a wonderful view and magical lighting, and even while things are still being set up, the staff work hard to make guests happy. The igloo had no internet, though, and the food choices were limited and felt repetitive from night to night.

Dinner was a highlight, with delicious food and a fun team. Reinis was a fantastic guide and went beyond what we expected. We spent four amazing nights at Balder Lodge as a family of four, and Alex’s staff were thoughtful, kind, and helpful.

The people made this stay feel like much more than a holiday. Management took time to hear what we hoped for in a special Christmas and thoughtfully arranged the details, helping make a little girl’s dream come true. Alex, Arina, Leonard, Chef, and the rest of the staff were kind, attentive, and clearly cared about making the visit memorable. Thank you to Alex and his extended Team at Balder Luxury Lodge. With its frozen river setting, the place feels quiet, pristine, and almost otherworldly. The suites are warm and comfortable, with understated luxury, and the natural beauty and hospitality came together beautifully.
