The setting makes Saariselkä feel like a small, authentic Lapland village. It has around 350 residents and is part of Inari municipality, with Ivalo bringing the combined population to roughly 7,000. The area includes one of Finland’s largest Sami communities, about 2,000 of whom live nearby. From the surrounding fells, the landscape changes to low trees and shrubs, and some bare peaks open up wide views. The village sits near Urho Kekkonen National Park, around 260 km north of Rovaniemi. Our small winter apartment was very quiet, right by a cross-country ski trail and just a short walk from the shopping center. It was well equipped, though the cleaning was only moderate. Each unit sleeps six, but four seems like the more comfortable number.

I felt very at home here and enjoyed my stay a lot. It’s cozy and has everything you need.

The sauna had really good steam, the dishes were high quality, and the location was good. When we thought the dishwasher was tilted, the maintenance man arrived quickly. The cleaning could have been better: we had to vacuum rubbish off the floor and clean the mattresses before making the beds. The ladies would have liked more shelves too. Still, things were fine in the end, and we’ll try to book the same apartment next fall.

Moitakuru is in a peaceful spot close to Saariselkä’s services. Following the paths, it takes just two or three minutes to walk to the center and the store. The UKK park starts around the corner, and the ski trail is only a few hundred meters away, which is a real bonus for skiers. The six-person unit we used could do with an update. Its bedroom partitions are soundproof, the beds are soft (a matter of taste), and the power sockets are tucked under the beds. There’s a fireplace for warmth and atmosphere. The kitchen is fully equipped, with dishes, a drying cabinet, dishwasher, 5 kg washing machine, coffee maker, kettle, microwave, and more.

A very practical place to stay, right among Saariselkä’s services.
