Radisson Blu Grand Hotel Tammer, Tampere

It’s a beautiful historic hotel with modern amenities, right in a great location. Getting to the lobby can be difficult for people with mobility issues: on-site parking is limited, and although there is wheelchair access, the ramp is suitable only for wheelchairs.

This place brought The Shining to mind, which lightened what was otherwise a daunting review. Thankfully, the lifts seem to be the newest part of the hotel. We were on the 6th floor, and luckily not in room 217. The Art Deco style would be difficult to modernise without spoiling it, so it is what it is. I’d recommend staying here only if you like that kind of thing. Our room had dark furniture and so little space around the bed that I had to edge past it sideways. The shower room was tiny, with a shelf just big enough for a toothbrush. The table lamp was another oddity: the button went through “on,” “on bright,” “bright flashing,” then “off.” I checked another room and found the same settings. Who wants a flashing light just as they’re settling in for the night? Take a torch to breakfast, and try the black pudding if you can find it. Parking is limited and expensive.

I still love this hotel’s beautiful Art Deco architecture and decor, and I used to love staying here. But service quality has slipped in recent years. One poor choice is having the reception shift change right when check-in begins, which delays the process and creates queues. On my last stay, a very loud party was the worst part. We could hear the noise in our room late into the night. At this price, I fully expect a good night’s sleep, so that was unacceptable.

The best thing about this Radisson is the location, just steps from the city center and an easy walk to restaurants and shops. My room was clean, well maintained, and nicely appointed, a cozy place to return to after exploring. It was a compact single room, though, as you’d expect in an older hotel, and the elevator is small too, so luggage or extra passengers make for a snug ride. It has a classic European feel, but some amenities are dated. There’s no air conditioning, which could be uncomfortable in warmer weather. Parking at the hotel is limited to about 10 spots. A garage two minutes away was convenient and easy to use. If you want a central base and don’t mind older facilities, it’s a solid choice. Pack light.
