Gjaargardur Guesthouse Gjogv

We stopped here first on our outing in Gjogv for coffee and a quick piece of cake before looking around town. The building is lovely, with a grass roof and a great view over Gjogv. Inside, I was intrigued by the sleeping spaces tucked behind sliding panels around what might be a dining room or common hall. I'm not sure if those are rooms guests can rent or a traditional recreation of how a large house might have been arranged, but they were fascinating.

The view is striking, and there are hiking options nearby. Our room in the main building was small but fine, though the bathroom is old. The guesthouse rooms were very clean. Breakfast had fresh fruit and a coffee machine for specialty drinks, but no scrambled eggs or sausages, and the selection was the same each day.

The staff at both the restaurant and guest house were really nice, efficient, and helpful, and the breakfast buffet worked well. Dinner was a pleasant surprise for a vegetarian: the menu had an option beyond salad. When we visited, it was cauliflower steak with tomato soup and herb-roasted potatoes. I think the choice changes daily. The cauliflower had real flavor, not just steamed or roasted with a little salt, and the meal filled us up without that heavy carb-coma feeling. Dessert was a little unusual, and we're used to larger portions.

I only ate at the restaurant, stopping for dinner before driving back to Torshavn. Salmon was the only dinner choice, but it was cooked just right and came with vegetables and bread and butter. The food was delicious, especially considering how remote the guesthouse is and how much effort it must take to bring in fresh supplies. Getting to Gjogv means taking a spectacular road with several high, one-lane switchbacks before dropping back down to sea level. That drive is unreal. I'd like to stay here for a night or two on my next trip to the Faroes.
