Domaine Gaogaia (Ex Domaine & Cie)

The room was spacious and clean, the restaurant food was great, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The quiet location near Aix en Provence was nice too. We stayed at Domaine Gao for one night in July to see if it might work as our wedding venue. Once we tried to plan the wedding, though, communication became very difficult. The event manager had already not replied to us before our visit, and afterward she did not speak English or try to use a translator or get someone to help with emails. Just before we were due to pay the deposit, extra costs appeared that had never been mentioned. We found a solution, but because communication was so poor, we asked for a written agreement listing the services included. She left that unanswered for a week, then said they couldn’t sign the draft we’d sent. We offered to amend it, but heard nothing more. In the end, the event manager ghosted us, so we chose another venue for our wedding. It’s a shame for the venue itself, but who wants to get married under those circumstances? I can’t recommend trying to plan an event there if you don’t speak French. If you do, good luck with the event manager.

We spent a long weekend at Domaine Gaogaïa earlier this month. The setting was peaceful, and having a glass of wine on the terrace overlooking the domaine was a lovely moment. Our room had a charming country house feel and was clean and spacious. Breakfast had a nice range of choices and was delicious, though the pastries were a bit lackluster and some of the bowls and plates weren’t very practical. We also had a delightful dinner at Gaodina. The menu is small but uses quality ingredients. Service took a while, and a tray of drinks got spilled, but we still had a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the beautiful setting. A couple of things would help in the room: shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom, and bigger mugs at the tea and coffee station. The welcome from the moment we arrived was warm. I’d recommend Domaine Gaogaïa for a laid-back stay near Aix-en-Provence and within reach of other destinations. You do need a car.

It was such a magical place that I proposed to my girlfriend there. They helped make the whole experience more special than I can put into words. We’ll keep coming back for big anniversaries. I stayed at Domaine Gaogaïa for 4 nights, drawn by its unusual grounds and striking architecture. It met and exceeded what I’d hoped for. The hotel staff are really friendly and accommodating, and hotel guests get preference when booking lunch or dinner tables. The restaurant is popular for good reason, so book ahead as they recommend. I was impressed by how the restaurant and hotel combine sustainability with luxury. The continental breakfast had everything I could want, and each dining space is beautiful. I didn’t manage to use the pool this time, but I hope to return and have a swim.
