Novak Djokovic backed the use of a shot clock at the Rogers Cup after beating Peter Polansky on Wednesday to reach the third round. He said it hadn’t affected him negatively in his two matches and that, if anything, it felt like there was more time because the clock only starts once the chair umpire calls the score. He was comfortable with it and liked having shot clocks at tournaments ahead of the US Open. The clock had first been used at US Open qualifying and the Next Gen ATP Finals the previous year, and was also used in Washington, D.C. the week before. The owner is nice, but that wasn’t enough to make up for the poor condition of the place. The room was very small, and the old toilet made a terrible noise. Worst of all, there was such a heavy cleaning-product smell that walking into the room was unbearable. It felt like toilet cleaner had been put everywhere. I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d rather pay 10 or 20 euros more to avoid that smell.

The owners gave us a really warm welcome, and breakfast was generous. It’s a small hotel opposite the train station, with good value for money and a room that has everything you need. There’s no restaurant, which makes it easy to eat in town and do some sightseeing.

The decor was in very poor taste, and the bed was too small and low quality. The toilet was in the room without any separation. The only thing going for this place is the price, and there was a constant, very unpleasant smell of age and damp.

The owners are nice, and the rooms have been renovated, but they’re still filthy. I’ve been twice, and both times the reception area smelled bad, as did the hallways and rooms. The place badly needs proper ventilation and a thorough spring cleaning. Budget travellers might still find it useful. I’d only stay at the Hôtel de Paris as a last resort, if at all. The Hôtel des Ducs is right next door and is something else.
