Hotel de la Gare

A lovely surprise for anyone who isn't after a five-star stay at any cost. We were there as a group for Ambertrail 2026 and got a really warm welcome. The owners were friendly and flexible, the rooms were clean with the essentials, and dinner was excellent.

The bill and the lack of basic room comforts made this stay a disaster for me. They charged the full amount first, then told me only after I'd paid that dinner would have made the bill €12 cheaper. When I questioned it, the managers said that's just how things are here. They're pleasant enough, but not efficient: information was either wrong or came too late. For a hotel costing over €100, with breakfast at €14, I expected more than this, especially since breakfast offered no more, and sometimes less, than other hotels. The list of things to fix is long: there should be a small bin in the room, the shower is tiny, and there aren't enough electrical outlets. Toasting tongs would help, and the coffee and so-called fruit juice weren't worthy of the name. At €14, really? And instead of a proper invoice, they gave me a cheap supermarket receipt.

Eight days after confirming my booking for two nights, the owner called to say I could only have one, with no explanation or alternative offered. I don't know the place and now have no wish to. The conversation was unpleasant and showed no respect for the customer.

I appreciated the owner's courtesy. The hotel is normally shut on Sunday nights, but after taking in a group of cyclists, they offered me a room. Breakfast was good value. I wish I'd had time to stay and try the restaurant.
