Continental Hôtel

We found this little hotel really comfortable and good value, much better than a budget chain. It's right by Angers' main square, and check-in was easy, with a late arrival option. You can also have breakfast brought to your room, which worked well since we had to leave early.

The location is cosy and right in the city centre, so it could suit you well if you're travelling light and arriving on foot or by taxi. Coming by car with bikes on the tow bar was a very different story. Reception couldn't give us useful directions and said we could unload in front of the hotel for a maximum of three minutes, though that spot is on a cycle path. The nearby car parks advertised with cheap overnight rates were full on Saturday. We parked far from the centre, walked back to the hotel, then had to work out the one correct driving route because the navigation struggled with the partial access through a pedestrian zone. We went back for the car to unload, then returned it to the distant car park. On Sunday we could move it to a closer car park, but be aware that only the overnight rate is cheap. The daytime rate is about 25 EURO. The hotel calls itself a biker hotel, but the laundry room beside reception realistically fits four bikes at most. Staff said they'd squeezed as many as fifteen in there before. There were around eight bikes when we stayed, packed so tightly that getting the rear one out meant moving all the bikes in front of it. They had to be shuffled around constantly. One of ours was damaged in the process, so we had to find and hire a repair shop before our cycling holiday could even start. We lost two days. The hotel didn't think it should contribute to the costs, and after the trip I'll have to buy a new rear wheel because its spokes were damaged there and it no longer runs smoothly. Never again.

Being right in the heart of the city made it easy to walk to the main sights and restaurants, and the hotel was great value. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff were very helpful and professional, especially the Breton receptionist.

There's just one small thing I missed: a little fridge. Still, I'd easily stay here again when I'm back in Angers. The rooms are big for France, the place is clean, and the central location worked well for us. Breakfast had lots of choice and was delicious, fresh, and varied. We came back in 2024 and it was just as good as in November 2023. That fruit salad at breakfast is reason enough to return.
