We never got my colleague’s personal belongings back. After we returned to collect them, the manager suddenly told us to leave, shouting in English. When we pressed for the items, he switched to French, went into a room, and wouldn’t answer the door or speak to us. Earlier that day, we’d already had trouble getting an invoice from him. I was travelling on business with two colleagues from China, and it felt as though the manager disliked foreigners, especially people from outside Europe.

The room was on the small side, but it was clean and warm, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. It’s a basic hotel with no frills, right across from the railway station. We’d be glad to stay again.

At 11 p.m. we couldn’t get back into the hotel because nobody had told us there was a nighttime entry code. No one answered the phone, and fortunately we found an available room at a nearby hotel. The receptionist wouldn’t accept responsibility, yet charged us for the whole night even though we’d only left luggage in the room. Local businesses said this wasn’t an isolated incident.

I should’ve checked the reviews first. There are a few other hotels within walking distance of the station, and that’s where I’ll stay if I ever come back to Angouleme.

We stopped here for one night on Sunday. The room was fine, and I was glad there was a fan. It’s a little hotel across from the town’s train station, with parking in a public car park.
